General Meeting Minutes

February 6, 2023

Pierce County Beekeepers Association General Meeting Minutes from Monday, Feb 6, 2023

Meeting time: 7:10 pm to 8:23pm.

 

 

Mary Dempsey (club president) started the meeting at 7:10 pm. There were 72 in attendance.

 

Kathleen Clerc (club vice president) was available to assist people if they needed help signing up to be members or to sign up for the beekeeping 101 class.

 

Mary introduced herself as the current PCBA president.

 

Mary then went on to talk about the following topics:

 

Current Business:

  • Basic background information on the benefits of being a member of the club; fees, speakers, beekeeping conference, 101 class, sustainable forum and OSU Master beekeeper program was given.

  • The need for a new Treasurer was discussed as Sherri Thomas the current treasurer would like to step down.

  • Katie Marler, Education Chair, discussed the plan for a scheduled Saturday Apiary day (2nd or 3rd Saturday of the month) and a possible second Apiary day on a scheduled weekday in addition to the weekend if volunteers could be found. Club members were asked to fill out a survey so a decision could be made.

 

Old business:

  • Next board meeting is Feb. 28, 2023. All members are welcome. Contact Mary for details on location. Her number is 253-640-1615

  • Apiary update: All the hives are dead, but replacement bees have been ordered and will arrive in April.

  • The new website is live!

 

New business:

  • We need volunteers for committees, committee chairs and Treasurer. See Mary or Kathleen if interested.

  • Work for the Silent Auction is going well. We are continuing to work on getting donations.

  • We will be taking a vote at the April meeting on changing the by-laws regarding the membership renewal dates for the club. It is proposed that the renewal day be changed from annually on Oct 1 to annually on the members sign up date.

  • The board voted to join WASBA as a club and dues have been paid.

  • The apiary house will be painted when we have a good weather window by High School seniors working on getting their community service hours.

  • WSU has given us 2 extra plots to grow pollinator plants on the WSU extension land. We need volunteers to do this. 1 plot at 3000 square feet and 1 plot at 6000 square feet.

 

Membership Drive Drawing

 

The membership drive went well. Mary and Kathleen drew names for 1st and 2nd place winners.

  • Harvard won a $50 gift card

  • Linda Purviance won the free membership for the year

 

Guest Speaker, Mary Kline

 

Subject: Ecological Connections Between Soils, Plants and Insects. This is the first of 2 presentations Mary Kline will be presenting to the club. The next one will be at the April meeting.

 

 

Door Prize

 

The door prize drawing was a mesh bag for keeping bees contained in a NUC.

Kathleen Clerc drew a name and Mary Dempsey handed out the prize.

 

Meeting was adjourned at 8:23pm.
